"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle."
Ernest Hemingway

Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “Goose Eggs”
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Bodega ;)”
Probably the only time I did not feel safe as there were a lot of street kids sitting around drinking & smoking & LOOKING..
I did not hang around to ask..
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Locked Warehouse”
An incredible space which would be enviable in any upwardly mobile suburb. Interesting that it was open like most other houses in these parts.
See the TV..
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Laneway”
I was just waiting in one spot.. Waiting till the locals got used to me standing there playing with my camera (as a decoy). I pretend to polish the lens & play with settings incessantly, mean while setting up the focus & settings.
Something is going on there as all sorts of people were walking in & out of the same door..
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Tailor With Strange Cloth”
* I do not use a zoom lens or fast DSLR, meaning the subject needs to be comfortable with the photographer which is no easy task these days. Also with a 35mm lens one needs to get very close..
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Cobbler”
I was very fortunate to get up close & personal even though he spoke no English & I spoke neither Mandarin nor Shanghainese.
* Fortunate as I do not use a zoom lens or fast DSLR, meaning the subject needs to be comfortable with the photographer which is no easy task these days. Also with a 35mm lens one needs to get very close..
Day 1: Streets of Old Shanghai - “The Sadness”
Not the way they live as they know no better, but that they are being moved out so that new development can take place..
An older man was explaining to my friend that they don’t know where they are being moved to & don’t understand why as his family is very happy.
